Working for an airline for nearly 25 years, I naturally spent loads of time in airport shops. I was always surprised that the products on sale there did not reflect the quality of products that I had seen during my travels. When I came to work at Edinburgh Airport I wanted to change that and opened Liquorice Tree in 2007 to bring the discerning customer a collection of beautiful products mainly made by Scottish artists, designers and manufacturers.
The collection will grow and constantly change and you will see many products that are very definitely not mass produced, the number being limited by the time an individual craftsman has to make them. So expect to see unusual pieces come and go - replaced by new and different ones. But we will always supplement our craft pieces with a selection of gifts from small manufacturers who are proud of the quality of their products.
Liquorice Tree’s mission is to make gift giving—no matter what the occasion or circumstance—simple and inspired. Through a unique assortment of gifts, and our easy to use Web site, we offer a shopping experience that’s modern and convenient, showcasing Scottish products, artists and crafts.
The name Liquorice Tree comes from the stunning centre piece in our shop at Edinburgh Airport where we hang the latest ‘must have’ scarf, bag or tie. For those who visit Scotland, here they will find a treasured memento.
But rather than limit the availability of such wonderful things to the lucky people who pass thought the airport, I decided to make them available to everyone via the web. Sometimes people are busy rushing to catch flights – so if you want to spend a bit more time deciding or you bought something when you were passing through and want another one, or you just can’t make it to Edinburgh - the web site is the answer. Enjoy your shopping!
